Ingredients
Marshmallow Mixture
- 32 ounces miniature marshmallows (2 bags)
- 12 tablespoons butter
Cereal
- 15 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Coloring
- Gel food coloring – red
- Gel food coloring – orange
- Gel food coloring – yellow
- Gel food coloring – green
- Gel food coloring – blue
- Gel food coloring – purple
Instructions
- Prepare the Pan: Line an 8 or 9-inch square baking pan with wax paper. Spray the top of the paper generously with non-stick cooking spray to ensure easy removal later.
- Melt Marshmallow Mixture: Place the miniature marshmallows and butter into a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir gently to combine. Repeat heating in 1-minute intervals, stirring between each, until the mixture is fully melted and smooth.
- Divide and Color: Evenly divide the melted marshmallow mixture into six separate bowls. Add gel food coloring to each bowl—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple—stirring well to achieve vivid, even colors.
- Add Cereal to Each Color: Fold 2½ cups of Rice Krispies cereal into each colored marshmallow mixture, mixing gently until the cereal is thoroughly coated.
- Layer the Colors: Using a buttered spatula, press each colored mixture into the prepared baking pan in thin, even layers. Start with red and proceed through orange, yellow, green, blue, and finish with purple, forming distinct layers.
- Firm and Cool: Press each layer firmly to compact the cereal treats and maintain a neat square shape. Once all layers are stacked and pressed, allow the mixture to cool completely and set.
- Remove and Trim: Carefully lift the layered square out of the pan using the wax paper. Place it on a cutting board and trim any uneven edges to make clean layers.
- Slice and Serve: Cut the square in half, then slice each half into approximately 1-inch-thick servings. Enjoy the vibrant, chewy treats fresh or store for later.
Notes
- Spraying the wax paper with non-stick spray prevents sticking and makes removal easier.
- Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without altering the mixture’s consistency.
- Press the layers firmly to ensure the treats hold together well when sliced.
- These treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days for best freshness.
- Microwave times may vary based on power, so heat the marshmallow mixture carefully to avoid burning.
