Ingredients
For Black Sesame Powder
- 1/2 cup black sesame seeds
For Black Sesame Soup
- 1/4 cup black sesame powder
- 1 1/2 cups water, plus more as needed
- 2 tablespoons rice flour
- 2 tablespoons glutinous rice flour
- 2 tablespoons sweetener of your choice (Chinese rock sugar, honey, or cane sugar)
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
Instructions
- Roast the black sesame seeds: Place black sesame seeds in a dry pan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 3-5 minutes until the seeds become fragrant and begin to pop. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
- Grind the roasted seeds: Transfer the cooled black sesame seeds to a spice grinder or coffee grinder. Pulse in short bursts until finely ground, taking care not to over-blend and create a paste. Store the powder in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer if not using immediately.
- Combine ingredients for the soup: In a saucepan, add 1 1/2 cups water, rice flour, glutinous rice flour, and 1/4 cup black sesame powder. Stir to combine well.
- Cook and thicken the soup: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Whisk or stir continuously for about 8-10 minutes as the soup thickens into a smooth consistency.
- Sweeten the soup: Add 2 tablespoons of your preferred sweetener and stir until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired. If the soup is too thick, add a little more water and stir until you reach your preferred consistency.
- Finish with coconut oil: Stir in 1 teaspoon of coconut oil if desired to create a richer texture and enhanced flavor. Remove the soup from heat.
- Serve warm: Ladle the black sesame soup into small bowls and serve warm for a comforting dessert experience.
Notes
- Grinding black sesame seeds freshly helps retain their rich flavor and aroma.
- The soup thickness can be adjusted by adding more water according to personal preference.
- Sweetener choice is flexible: Chinese rock sugar provides a traditional flavor, but honey or cane sugar work well too.
- Coconut oil is optional but adds a nice depth and smoothness to the soup.
- Store leftover black sesame powder airtight in the refrigerator or freezer to keep it fresh longer.
