Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 clove garlic
- 400 g frozen peas
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint
- 1 tbsp crème fraiche
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
Instructions
- Peel the garlic: Remove the skin from the garlic clove to prepare it for cooking.
- Heat water: Bring a saucepan filled with water to a boil, then add the salt, frozen peas, and peeled garlic clove to the boiling water.
- Simmer the peas: Reduce the heat to let the peas cook gently, simmering for about 4 minutes until tender but still bright green.
- Prepare the mint: Remove the leaves from the mint stalks and finely chop the leaves for fresh flavor.
- Drain the peas: Carefully drain the cooked peas and garlic, then return them to the saucepan.
- Crush the garlic: Using a fork or the back of a spoon, crush the softened garlic clove to release its flavor.
- Add creamy elements: Stir in the crème fraiche, freshly ground black pepper, chopped mint, and crushed garlic to the peas.
- Mash the peas: Use a potato masher to roughly mash the pea mixture, leaving some texture for a rustic mushy pea consistency.
- Season and serve: Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed, then serve the minted mushy peas warm as a flavorful side dish.
Notes
- Use fresh mint for the best flavor; dried mint won’t give the same bright taste.
- Crème fraiche adds creaminess but can be substituted with sour cream or Greek yogurt.
- For a vegan version, replace crème fraiche with a plant-based alternative.
- Don’t overcook the peas to preserve their vibrant color and fresh taste.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with fish and chips or grilled meats.
