The Mai Tai is a classic tropical cocktail known for its perfect balance of sweet, sour, and fruity flavors. This refreshing drink combines white rum, lime juice, orange curacao, and orgeat syrup, topped with dark rum and garnished with vibrant fruits and mint, making it a favorite for tiki bar enthusiasts and cocktail lovers alike.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving

Ingredients

Liquids

  • 1 ½ ounces white rum
  • ½ ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
  • ½ ounce orange curacao (or Grand Marnier, triple sec, or orange liqueur)
  • ½ ounce orgeat syrup
  • ¾ ounce dark rum

Other

  • Ice

Garnishes (optional)

  • Maraschino cherry
  • Lime wedge
  • Pineapple slice
  • Mint sprig

Instructions

  1. Shake cocktail ingredients: Pour the white rum, fresh lime juice, orange curacao, and orgeat syrup into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled and combined.
  2. Pour over ice: Strain the rum mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice.
  3. Float dark rum: Slowly pour the dark rum over the back of a spoon to float it on top of the cocktail, creating a layered effect.
  4. Add garnishes: Garnish the drink with a maraschino cherry, lime wedge, pineapple slice, and a sprig of mint for a tropical presentation.

Notes

  • Using fresh squeezed lime juice is essential for the best flavor.
  • If you don’t have orgeat syrup, you can substitute with almond syrup or omit for a less nutty taste.
  • To float dark rum easily, pour it slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the cocktail’s surface.
  • The choice of orange liqueur can slightly change flavor nuances; Grand Marnier offers a richer orange flavor compared to triple sec.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the layering and fresh garnishes at their best.
