Indulge in the rich and decadent Kahlua Chocolate Truffles, combining smooth semisweet chocolate with the bold flavors of espresso and Kahlua liqueur. These luscious truffles are enriched with butter and cream for a velvety texture, then coated in finely grated chocolate for an irresistible finish. Perfect for special occasions or a luxurious homemade treat.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 3 servings (about 18 truffles)

Ingredients

Truffle Base

  • 14 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder
  • 5 and 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes and at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon Kahlua liqueur

Chocolate Coating

  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, grated or finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chocolate mixture: Chop the chocolate and set it aside. In a saucepan over low heat, warm the heavy cream gently until small bubbles begin to form around the edges. Remove from heat, then stir in the espresso powder and chopped chocolate. Whisk the mixture until smooth and glossy. Let it cool for 5 minutes before stirring in the cubed butter and Kahlua liqueur to incorporate thoroughly.
  2. Chill the mixture: Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then cover tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until the mixture is firm enough to scoop.
  3. Prepare the chocolate coating: Grate the semisweet chocolate using the coarse side of a grater, or finely chop it if a grater is not available. Transfer the grated chocolate to a wide, shallow dish and set aside for rolling the truffles.
  4. Form the truffles: Line a large baking sheet with wax paper. Using a tablespoon measure, scoop out rounds of the chilled chocolate mixture. Quickly shape each portion into a smooth ball using your hands.
  5. Coat the truffles: Roll each chocolate ball in the grated chocolate coating until fully covered. Place onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each truffle.
  6. Store the truffles: Once all truffles are coated, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to two weeks, making them ideal for prepping in advance or gifting.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is at room temperature to blend smoothly into the chocolate mixture.
  • Chilling the truffle base for at least 4 hours is crucial to achieve the right consistency for shaping.
  • Use high-quality semisweet chocolate for the best flavor and texture.
  • If you prefer, you can dust the truffles with cocoa powder instead of grated chocolate for a different texture.
  • Bring the truffles to room temperature before serving for the best taste and melt-in-your-mouth experience.
