4.2 from 11 reviews

This easy homemade date paste recipe provides a natural, healthy sugar substitute that is perfect for sweetening baked goods, smoothies, sauces, and more. Made from just two simple ingredients—dates and hot water—this naturally sweet paste is quick to prepare and free from added sugars or preservatives.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 cup date paste

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 tightly packed cup dates, pitted (about 5 oz or 150 g)
  • ¾ cup hot, recently boiled water

Instructions

  1. Soak Dates: Place the pitted dates in a bowl and cover them with ¾ cup of hot, recently boiled water. Allow the dates to soak for 10 minutes to soften.
  2. Prepare for Blending: Transfer both the soaked dates and the soaking water into a high-speed blender. If your blender advises against blending hot liquids, wait until the water has cooled slightly before proceeding.
  3. Blend into Paste: Blend on high speed for about one minute. Start the blender on low speed and quickly increase to high to help break down the dates more efficiently and avoid clumping. Scrape down the sides of the blender jar as needed to ensure even blending.
  4. Store the Paste: Once the mixture forms a smooth, thick paste, pour it into a glass jar. Refrigerate until ready to use. The paste can be stored for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • If your blender is not high-speed, blending may take longer and require more scraping.
  • Use medjool dates or any soft, naturally sweet dates for best results.
  • Date paste can be used as a 1:1 substitute for sugar or honey in many recipes.
  • Store date paste in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.
  • Adjust water quantity slightly to achieve desired paste consistency.
