Ingredients
Ingredients
- 12 ounces fresh cranberries, washed
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 orange, zested and juiced (divide the zest in half)
Instructions
- Prepare Cranberries: In a medium saucepan, add all but 1/2 cup of the fresh cranberries, setting the remaining cranberries aside for later use.
- Add Sugar, Water, and Orange: Stir in 1 cup of white sugar, 1/4 cup of water, half of the orange zest, and the juice from the whole orange. Mix to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
- Boil the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the cranberry mixture to a boil, allowing the cranberries to start breaking down.
- Simmer with Spices: Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the cinnamon stick, ground allspice, and ground nutmeg to infuse the sauce with warm spice flavors.
- Add Reserved Cranberries: Add the reserved 1/2 cup fresh cranberries to the sauce and stir to blend evenly, ensuring some cranberries remain whole for texture.
- Cook Further: Continue to simmer the sauce for an additional 5 to 7 minutes until it thickens and the cranberries soften.
- Finish and Cool: Remove the cinnamon stick, stir in the remaining orange zest, and let the sauce cool to room temperature before serving.
- Serve: Enjoy this homemade spiced cranberry sauce as a delicious accompaniment to your holiday dishes.
