Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup applesauce (plain, unsweetened, without any additives)
- 1/4 cup almond butter or peanut butter (raw and natural, unsalted and unsweetened, free of any flavors and xylitol)
- 2 large eggs
Dry Ingredients
- 4 cups oat flour (plus 1/2 cup more if necessary and for dusting)
- 1 cup grated carrots (peeled first)
- 1/2 cup coconut flakes (unsweetened natural)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, use a handheld electric mixer to beat the applesauce, almond butter, and eggs together until fully blended and smooth.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Add the oat flour, grated carrots, and coconut flakes to the wet mixture and stir until just incorporated. Adjust the dough texture by adding water if it crumbles or additional oat flour (up to 1/2 cup) if it’s too sticky, aiming for a slightly tacky but manageable dough.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto a surface lightly sprinkled with oat flour and knead gently 3-4 times until it forms a cohesive ball.
- Roll Dough: Lightly dust a rolling pin with oat flour and roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch.
- Cut Shapes: Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes for the treats and carefully transfer them onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake Treats: Bake the treats in the preheated oven for about 18-20 minutes until they are dry and the edges turn golden brown.
- Cool Treats: Remove from the oven and let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog.
Notes
- Make sure to use nut butters that are free from xylitol and any flavorings, as these can be toxic to dogs.
- Adjust the dough consistency with extra oat flour or water as needed to ensure it is manageable for rolling and cutting.
- Store baked treats in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
- These treats are meant as snacks and should complement a balanced diet for your dog.
- Always consult your vet before introducing new treats into your dog’s diet, especially if your dog has allergies or dietary restrictions.
