Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ cup finely diced red onion (about ¼ large red onion)
- ½ cup finely diced red bell pepper (about ½ pepper)
- 16 ounces ground turkey (93/7)
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning (more if desired)
- ⅓ cup water (more if needed)
For Serving
- Tortillas
- Cheese
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Salsa
- Sour cream
- Other preferred taco toppings
Instructions
- Heat oil: In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Note that if using a nonstick skillet, oil may not be necessary.
- Cook vegetables and turkey: Add the diced red onion, red bell pepper, and ground turkey to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until the turkey is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender.
- Add flour and seasoning: Stir in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning, mixing well. Continue cooking for 1 to 2 minutes until the spices become fragrant and incorporated.
- Simmer with water: Pour in ⅓ cup of water and reduce the heat to medium-low. Allow the mixture to simmer, stirring occasionally, until most of the water evaporates, about 10 minutes. Keep the skillet partially covered and add small amounts of water as needed to prevent drying out until ready to serve.
Notes
- Taco seasoning: If using store-bought taco seasoning that contains thickeners, omit the flour from the recipe.
- Ground meat alternatives: Substitute lean ground beef or a 50/50 mix of beef and turkey if preferred.
