This Healthy Apple Crumble is a better-for-you twist on the classic fall dessert. Combining sweet and tart apples with a crunchy, gluten-free crumble topping made with vegan butter and coconut sugar, this recipe offers all the traditional flavors in a wholesome, dairy-free, and vegan-friendly version. Perfect for cozy autumn gatherings, it’s deliciously gooey and comforting with a delightful texture contrast.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Crumb Topping

  • ¾ cup 1:1 gluten free flour (King Arthur Measure for Measure gluten free flour recommended)
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp gluten free baking powder
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup vegan butter or coconut oil, melted

Filling

  • 6 large apples (3 Honeycrisp, 3 Granny Smith), cored, sliced, and cut into bite-sized chunks
  • ⅓ cup coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly spray a 10.5″ x 7.5″ rectangular baking dish with cooking oil to prevent sticking. Any baking dish of similar size will work.
  2. Mix Filling: In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples with coconut sugar, maple syrup, arrowroot powder, lemon juice, sea salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Pour this apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and set aside.
  3. Make Crumb Topping: In a separate bowl, mix gluten-free flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, sea salt, and cinnamon. Pour in melted vegan butter or coconut oil, then mix with a fork until you achieve a crumbly texture with small chunks.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling to cover completely. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  5. Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally topped with your favorite vegan or regular vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Dairy Free/Vegan: This recipe is completely dairy free and vegan by using vegan butter or coconut oil. Substitute with regular butter if preferred.
  • Easy Sugar Swaps: You can swap coconut sugar for brown sugar, but note this may reduce the ‘healthy’ factor. For lower sugar, substitute with brown sugar Swerve.
  • Storage: Keep leftovers in an airtight container refrigerated. Warm in the microwave before serving.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve warm topped with vegan vanilla ice cream or regular vanilla ice cream for added creaminess.
