This classic Funnel Cake recipe delivers crispy, golden fried treats perfect for any occasion. Light and airy, these funnel cakes are easy to make at home and can be topped with whipped cream, fresh fruit, chocolate fudge, caramel sauce, or dusted with powdered sugar for a sweet finish.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Funnel Cake Batter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 2 eggs

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil (for frying, about 1 inch deep)

Toppings (Optional)

  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh fruit
  • Chocolate fudge sauce
  • Caramel sauce
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil: Pour about 1 inch of vegetable oil into a frying pan and heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F, ensuring the oil is hot enough to create a crispy funnel cake.
  2. Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and eggs until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Pour Batter: Pour the batter into a funnel, covering the tip with your finger to control flow, or use a squeeze bottle. Position over the hot oil and slowly release the batter in a criss-cross and swirling motion to form the classic funnel cake shape.
  4. Fry First Side: Fry the batter for 1 to 2 minutes or until it turns golden brown and crisp on one side.
  5. Flip Funnel Cake: Using tongs, carefully flip the funnel cake and fry the other side for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  6. Drain Excess Oil: Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on a paper towel–lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Repeat: Repeat the frying process with the remaining batter, maintaining oil temperature at 375°F for consistent results.
  8. Serve: Serve the funnel cakes warm topped with your choice of whipped cream, fresh fruit, chocolate fudge sauce, caramel sauce, or a dusting of powdered sugar for a delicious treat.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at 375°F for optimal frying results; too low and the cake will absorb excess oil, too high and it may burn.
  • You can substitute milk with buttermilk for a slightly tangier flavor and lighter texture.
  • Use a squeeze bottle if you don’t have a funnel to easily control the shape of the funnel cake.
  • Ensure the oil is deep enough (about 1 inch) to allow the funnel cake to float and cook evenly.
  • Serve immediately after frying for the best taste and texture.
