A warm and comforting French Toast Casserole featuring buttery brown sugar base topped with cinnamon-infused custard-soaked French bread cubes, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a delicious breakfast or brunch serving 8.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Base

  • ½ a loaf of French bread (about 8 oz), cut into cubes
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Custard Mixture

  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon (divided)

Topping

  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar (for topping)
  • Powdered sugar for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Butter a 13×9 inch (9×13) baking pan thoroughly to prevent sticking and set aside.
  2. Make Brown Sugar Butter Mixture: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the ½ cup butter. Once melted, stir in 1 cup packed brown sugar until fully dissolved and smooth. Pour this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  3. Arrange Bread Cubes: Spread the French bread cubes evenly over the brown sugar butter layer in the pan, ensuring good coverage.
  4. Prepare Custard Mixture: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together 6 eggs, 2 cups milk, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon until well combined. Pour this custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all cubes are saturated.
  5. Add Final Toppings: Sprinkle the remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon brown sugar evenly over the top of the custard-soaked bread.
  6. Bake: Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and optionally sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve warm and enjoy your French Toast Casserole!

Notes

  • For best results, use day-old or slightly stale French bread to better absorb the custard mixture.
  • You can prepare the casserole the night before and refrigerate it, then bake in the morning to save time.
  • Adjust cinnamon and brown sugar topping to your preference for sweetness and spice level.
  • Optional additions include fresh fruits, nuts, or maple syrup when serving.
  • Ensure the pan is thoroughly buttered to avoid sticking and for added flavor.
