This Easy Strawberry and Apple Crumble recipe combines tart strawberries and sweet Golden Delicious apples under a crisp, buttery oat topping. Baked to golden perfection, this dessert delivers warm, fruity goodness with a hint of cinnamon, making it perfect for sharing with family and friends.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Fruit Filling

  • 4 Golden Delicious apples (1½ pounds, peeled, cored, and cut into ¼-inch slices)
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries (12 ounces, washed, hulled and cut into ⅛-inch slices)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (packed)

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed, light or dark)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon table salt

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven and prep the apples. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating, peel, core, and slice the Golden Delicious apples into ¼-inch slices, then arrange them evenly in a 12-inch deep dish ceramic or glass pie plate.
  2. Prep the strawberries. Wash, hull, and cut the strawberries into thin ⅛-inch slices, then set them aside in a small bowl.
  3. Add cornstarch and part of the brown sugar. To the bowl of strawberries, add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Stir gently to combine and let this mixture rest for 5 minutes to allow the fruit juices to thicken while you prepare the crumble topping.
  4. Make the crumble topping. In a separate small bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, old-fashioned oats, the remaining brown sugar, melted unsalted butter, cinnamon, and salt. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly mixed and crumbly.
  5. Assemble the layers. Pour the strawberry mixture evenly over the sliced apples in the pie plate, spreading it out gently to cover the apple layer completely.
  6. Top with crumble and bake. Evenly distribute the crumble topping over the fruit layer. Place the assembled crumble uncovered on the bottom rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The crumble is done when the topping is golden brown, the edges are bubbling, and a paring knife inserted into the center meets no resistance from the fruit.

Notes

  • Use Golden Delicious apples for a sweet, tender filling; granny smith apples will add tartness if preferred.
  • Letting the strawberry mixture rest helps thicken the fruit juices for a perfect filling consistency.
  • The crumble topping can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days before baking.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special treat.
  • Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the crumble topping precisely.
