Ingredients
Cake Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup Coca-Cola (NOT diet)
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frosting Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
- 1/3 cup baking cocoa
- 1/3 cup Coca-Cola
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the cake evenly.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, white sugar, and salt. Set this mixture aside as the base for your batter.
- Create Chocolate Mixture: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter along with Coca-Cola and cocoa powder, stirring as the butter melts. Bring this mixture to a boil, then remove it from the heat.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Slowly pour the hot chocolate mixture over the dry flour mixture, stirring gently to create a smooth batter without lumps.
- Mix Additional Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vinegar, baking soda, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Combine All Ingredients: Add the wet mixture to the large bowl with the batter and mix thoroughly until everything is evenly incorporated.
- Prepare for Baking: Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan and pour the batter into it, smoothing the top evenly.
- Bake the Cake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Prepare Frosting: While the cake bakes, heat butter, Coca-Cola, and cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted. Remove from heat promptly.
- Mix Frosting: Pour the hot butter and cocoa mixture over the sifted powdered sugar in a large bowl, add vanilla extract, and beat until smooth and creamy.
- Frost the Cake: Immediately pour the frosting over the hot cake and use a rubber spatula to spread it evenly while warm.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing and serving to ensure the frosting sets perfectly.
Notes
- Use regular Coca-Cola, not diet, to achieve the proper sweetness and texture in the cake and frosting.
- Ensure the cake is slightly warm when frosting to help the frosting spread smoothly and soak in slightly.
- Greasing the pan well prevents the cake from sticking and makes removal easier.
- The vinegar reacts with the baking soda to help the cake rise and become light and fluffy.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend suitable for baking.
- Store any leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate to keep longer.
