Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups plain yogurt (dairy-free yogurt works too)
- 1/2 cup Dutch or regular cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup sweetener of choice (such as sugar, honey, or a sugar substitute)
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Optional Add-ins
- 1/3 cup peanut butter or almond butter
- Chocolate chips
- Chopped nuts
- Mashed banana
Instructions
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl or blender, thoroughly combine the plain yogurt, cocoa powder, salt, sweetener, and vanilla extract. If desired, also add peanut butter, almond butter, or other add-ins like chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or mashed banana to the mixture.
- Prepare to Freeze: Transfer the combined mixture to an ice cream machine if available, or into a large, airtight container suitable for freezing.
- Churn or Freeze: If using an ice cream machine, churn the mixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a creamy consistency, then serve immediately. If using the freezer method, place the container in the freezer.
- Stir During Freezing: For the freezer method, remove the container every 30 minutes and stir the mixture to break up ice crystals and promote creaminess. Repeat this stirring process for 2 to 3 hours until the frozen yogurt is firm yet creamy.
- Serving and Storage: Serve the chocolate frozen yogurt fresh for the best texture, as it tends to freeze solid when stored. For leftovers, thaw for about 15 minutes before scooping and serving to regain a creamy texture.
Notes
- Using a Dutch-process cocoa powder will give a smoother, richer chocolate flavor.
- Dairy-free yogurts such as coconut or almond yogurt can be used for a vegan version.
- Sweetener type can be adjusted based on dietary preferences or substitutes like stevia or erythritol for a low-sugar option.
- Stirring the yogurt periodically during freezing is crucial to prevent hard ice crystals and maintain creaminess without an ice cream machine.
- Adding peanut butter or nut butter enriches the flavor and texture, making the frozen yogurt more indulgent.
- Freshly made frozen yogurt tastes best the same day as homemade batches may become very firm when fully frozen; allow thawing before serving leftovers.
