This Calamansi Margarita is a refreshing twist on the classic margarita, featuring the vibrant and tangy flavor of fresh calamansi juice. With a honey and coarse sea salt rim, this cocktail balances sweet, sour, and salty notes perfectly, offering a delightful tropical citrus experience in every sip. Ready in just 5 minutes, it’s an ideal single-serving cocktail for a quick and flavorful treat.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving

Ingredients

For the Glass Rim

  • Honey, enough to coat the glass rim
  • Coarse sea salt, as needed for rimming

For the Cocktail

  • 1 ½ oz tequila (silver/blanco or reposado)
  • ½ oz orange liqueur (such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
  • ¾ oz fresh squeezed calamansi juice
  • ¾ oz simple syrup (see note for recipe)
  • Ice, a handful for mixing and 1 large ice cube for serving
  • Calamansi fruit half, for garnish

Simple Syrup

  • 1 part sugar
  • 1 part water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Glass Rim: Place a small amount of honey on a flat plate. On a separate flat plate, spread coarse sea salt. Run the rim of your serving glass through the honey to coat it lightly, then gently roll the honey-coated rim into the coarse salt to form a salt crust. Set the glass aside.
  2. Mix the Cocktail: Fill a mixing glass with a handful of ice cubes. Pour in 1 ½ oz of tequila, followed by ½ oz of orange liqueur. Add ¾ oz of fresh calamansi juice and ¾ oz of simple syrup. Stir thoroughly to combine all the ingredients and chill the mixture evenly.
  3. Serve: Place one large ice cube into the prepared glass. Strain the chilled cocktail mixture into the glass over the ice cube. Garnish with a half of calamansi fruit on the rim for an extra citrus aroma. Serve immediately and enjoy.
  4. Optional Simple Syrup Preparation: To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely, then remove from heat and let cool before using.

Notes

  • Use fresh calamansi juice for the best flavor as it provides a unique citrus profile distinct from lime or lemon.
  • Simple syrup can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • If calamansi juice is unavailable, a mix of fresh lime juice with a little orange juice can be used as a substitute, though this will change the flavor profile.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup to tweak sweetness according to your taste preferences.
  • Serving the cocktail chilled and freshly mixed ensures optimal flavor balance and refreshment.
