Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon pumpkin spice
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
Wet Ingredients
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¾ cup pumpkin purée
Maple Glaze
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- ¼ teaspoon maple extract
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Liberally butter and flour two standard donut baking pans with six wells each, using a total of 10 wells.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, pumpkin spice, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Melt Butter and Combine with Sugar: Melt the unsalted butter in a large bowl, then whisk in the brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Whisk in the egg, pure vanilla extract, and pumpkin purée into the butter and sugar mixture, mixing thoroughly.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gently fold the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients using a spatula, mixing until just combined without overmixing.
- Fill Donut Pans: Fit a piping bag with a large round tip and fill it with the donut batter. Pipe the batter evenly into each of the 10 donut cavities, filling them about three-quarters full. Alternatively, spoon the batter carefully into the wells.
- Bake Donuts: Bake the donuts in the preheated oven for 9-11 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean.
- Cool Donuts: Allow the donuts to cool on a cooling rack for 5 minutes before removing them from the pans to cool completely.
- Prepare Maple Glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, maple extract, and 3-4 tablespoons of milk until the glaze is smooth and well blended.
- Glaze Donuts: Dip the cooled donuts into the maple glaze, twisting them as you lift to allow excess glaze to drip back into the bowl.
- Set and Serve: Let the glaze set fully before serving to enjoy the donuts at their best.
Notes
- Ensure not to overmix the batter to keep the donuts tender and soft.
- If you do not have a piping bag, spooning the batter carefully works just as well.
- You can adjust the thickness of the glaze by adding more or less milk.
- These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative and use dairy-free milk in the glaze.
