Ingredients
1 loaf fresh French bread
Secret Sandwich Spread (see below)
5–6 slices deli cheese (smoked provolone or your choice)
8–10 ounces sliced deli meat (ham, turkey, or your favorite)
5–6 crisp lettuce leaves (Romaine recommended)
1 large tomato, sliced
½ small red onion, thinly sliced
oregano (optional)
Easy Sandwich Dressing (for spread):
½ cup mayonnaise (light is fine)
½ cup sour cream (light is fine)
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
Instructions
- Slice the French bread loaf in half lengthwise.
- Prepare the spread by mixing mayonnaise, sour cream, and mustard in a small bowl.
- Spread the sandwich dressing generously on both sides of the bread.
- On the bottom half, layer cheese, then lettuce, tomato slices, and onion.
- Add sliced deli meats on top of the vegetables. Sprinkle oregano if desired.
- Place the top half of the bread over the filling.
- Wrap the sandwich in foil, parchment, or plastic wrap. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Slice into 2–3-inch portions and serve with chips or fresh fruit.
Notes
- Make ahead: Assemble a few hours in advance, refrigerate, and slice before serving.
- For less sogginess, add tomatoes and lettuce just before serving.
- Use a sturdy French or Italian loaf for best results.
- Toast the bread lightly for added texture.
- The sandwich spread keeps in the fridge for 1–2 weeks.
- Not suitable for reheating, but leftovers can be refreshed with extra lettuce.
