These Smashed Burger Tacos combine the delicious flavors of classic smashed burgers wrapped in warm flour tortillas and topped with fresh lettuce, pickles, red onion, cheddar cheese, and burger sauce. Quick and easy to prepare, they make a perfect casual meal for gatherings or weeknight dinners.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

For the Burger Tacos

  • 12 small flour tortillas (around 12cm in diameter)
  • 2 lb (1kg) ground beef / beef mince
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
  • Cheddar cheese slices (or American cheese as substitute)

For the Toppings

  • 4 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup sliced pickles
  • 1 red onion, finely sliced
  • Burger sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, garlic powder, dried oregano, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  2. Form the Taco Patties: Divide the seasoned beef mixture into 12 equal portions, about 2.5 oz (80g) each. Press each portion evenly and thinly into each flour tortilla. Alternatively, you can cook the meat on a hot skillet and smash the meat down with a spatula before adding the tortilla.
  3. Heat the Skillet: Warm a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook the Taco Patties: Place the smashed tacos with the meat side down on the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the meat begins to caramelize and develop a crust, then carefully flip each taco using a spatula.
  5. Add Cheese and Finish Cooking: Place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each meat patty side and cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt and the tortilla to turn golden brown and crisp.
  6. Keep Warm: Remove the tacos from the heat and keep them warm by covering with foil in a low oven if preparing in batches.
  7. Assemble and Serve: Top each taco with burger sauce, shredded lettuce, pickles, and finely sliced red onion. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • If preferred, American cheese can be substituted for cheddar for a creamier melting cheese.
  • You can prepare the meat patties in advance and keep them refrigerated until ready to cook to save time.
  • Keeping cooked tacos warm in the oven helps maintain crispness without drying them out.
  • Adjust seasoning levels to taste depending on preference or dietary restrictions.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute flour tortillas with corn tortillas if desired.
