Celebrate with these delightful Patriotic Red White and Blue Pastries featuring flaky puff pastry filled with sweet raspberry or blueberry preserves, topped with a smooth cream cheese filling, and garnished with fresh berries. Perfect for festive occasions, these colorful treats combine a crisp exterior with creamy and fruity flavors.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Pastries

  • One 17.3 ounce package puff pastry, thawed
  • 12 tablespoons raspberry and/or blueberry preserves
  • Chunky, sparkling white sugar (optional)
  • Filling

    • 6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
    • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar (divided: 1 tablespoon for pastries, 2 tablespoons for filling)
    • ⅔ cup heavy whipping cream
    • Garnish

      • 12 medium fresh raspberries
      • 36 medium fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400℉. Line one large rimmed baking sheet and one smaller baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Cut the Pastry Squares: Lay each sheet of thawed puff pastry on a cutting board and slice each sheet into 12 equal squares. Arrange half of the squares on the large baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  3. Create Cut-Out Tops: Using a small star-shaped cookie cutter (or circle/square if unavailable), cut the centers out of the remaining puff pastry squares. Place these cut-out star pieces on the smaller baking sheet.
  4. Assemble the Pastries: Spoon one tablespoon of raspberry or blueberry preserves into the center of each uncut square on the large baking sheet. Top each jam-filled square with one of the star-shaped cut-out squares. Press the edges with a fork to seal the layers together, and optionally sprinkle with chunky sparkling white sugar for added texture and sparkle.
  5. Bake the Pastries: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the pastries turn golden brown and puffed. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheets.
  6. Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar until smooth. Gradually add the heavy whipping cream while continuing to beat until the filling becomes thick, creamy, and pipeable.
  7. Fill and Garnish: Transfer the cream cheese filling into a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe the filling into the center of each cooled pastry. Garnish each pastry with fresh raspberries and blueberries as desired.
  8. Chill: Refrigerate the assembled pastries for at least one hour to set the filling before serving. Enjoy your festive dessert chilled for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute the star-shaped cookie cutter with any other shape such as a circle or square if a star is unavailable.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother filling.
  • For a sweeter finish, sprinkle chunky sparkling white sugar on top before baking, but it is optional.
  • Allow pastries to cool completely before filling to prevent the cream cheese filling from melting.
  • These pastries are best served chilled and can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours before serving.
