Instructions
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400℉. Line one large rimmed baking sheet and one smaller baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Cut the Pastry Squares: Lay each sheet of thawed puff pastry on a cutting board and slice each sheet into 12 equal squares. Arrange half of the squares on the large baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
- Create Cut-Out Tops: Using a small star-shaped cookie cutter (or circle/square if unavailable), cut the centers out of the remaining puff pastry squares. Place these cut-out star pieces on the smaller baking sheet.
- Assemble the Pastries: Spoon one tablespoon of raspberry or blueberry preserves into the center of each uncut square on the large baking sheet. Top each jam-filled square with one of the star-shaped cut-out squares. Press the edges with a fork to seal the layers together, and optionally sprinkle with chunky sparkling white sugar for added texture and sparkle.
- Bake the Pastries: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the pastries turn golden brown and puffed. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheets.
- Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar until smooth. Gradually add the heavy whipping cream while continuing to beat until the filling becomes thick, creamy, and pipeable.
- Fill and Garnish: Transfer the cream cheese filling into a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe the filling into the center of each cooled pastry. Garnish each pastry with fresh raspberries and blueberries as desired.
- Chill: Refrigerate the assembled pastries for at least one hour to set the filling before serving. Enjoy your festive dessert chilled for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute the star-shaped cookie cutter with any other shape such as a circle or square if a star is unavailable.
- Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother filling.
- For a sweeter finish, sprinkle chunky sparkling white sugar on top before baking, but it is optional.
- Allow pastries to cool completely before filling to prevent the cream cheese filling from melting.
- These pastries are best served chilled and can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours before serving.
