Italian Hot Chocolate (Cioccolata Calda) is a thick, velvety, and indulgent drink made with real dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and milk. Unlike regular hot cocoa, it has a rich, pudding-like consistency that’s perfect for cozy winter days or as an elegant dessert-style beverage.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

2 oz dark chocolate (60–70% cocoa), finely chopped

2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)

1 cup milk (2% or whole, divided)

1 tsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk ¼ cup milk with cornstarch until smooth. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, sift cocoa powder and whisk together with sugar. Set aside.
  3. Heat remaining ¾ cup + 1 tbsp milk in a medium pot until it just comes to a boil. Reduce heat to low.
  4. Whisk in the milk-cornstarch mixture, followed by the cocoa-sugar mixture. Continue whisking until smooth.
  5. Add chopped dark chocolate and whisk for about 3 minutes, or until melted and thickened to a velvety texture.
  6. Pour into mugs and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Simmer longer for an extra-thick, pudding-like version.
  • Use high-quality dark chocolate for the richest flavor.
  • Drink will thicken slightly as it cools.
  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored and reheated.
