Ingredients
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Sausage Filling
- 4 sausages, casings removed
- 1 tsp dried herbs (optional)
Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp milk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the sausage rolls.
- Prepare Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface for even thickness and easy rolling.
- Add Sausage Filling: Lay the sausage meat along one long edge of the pastry. Sprinkle dried herbs over the sausage if using, for added flavor.
- Roll and Seal: Carefully roll the pastry over the sausage meat, encasing it fully. Seal the edge by brushing it with the beaten egg to hold the roll together.
- Slice Rolls: Cut the rolled pastry into individual sausage roll portions of desired size, usually about 2 inches wide.
- Apply Egg Wash: Mix the remaining beaten egg with milk to create an egg wash. Brush it liberally over each sausage roll to give them a golden, glossy finish while baking.
- Bake: Place the sausage rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they puff up and turn golden brown.
Notes
- Ensure puff pastry is properly thawed for easier rolling and better texture.
- You can substitute the sausages with a vegetarian sausage alternative for a different diet preference.
- Chill the assembled rolls in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking to help them keep their shape.
- Serve warm with mustard or your favorite dipping sauce.
- Optional herbs like thyme, rosemary, or sage can enhance the flavor.
