A comforting and flavorful French Onion Rice recipe that combines long grain rice with rich French onion soup and beef broth, baked to perfection with pats of butter for a rich, savory dish. This easy-to-make side is perfect for gatherings or a cozy meal.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup long grain rice (Do not use instant rice as the texture will be overcooked and mushy)
  • 10.5 ounces (1 canned) French onion soup (undiluted, Campbell’s brand or generic)
  • 1¼ cup (10 ounces) beef broth
  • 8 tablespoons salted butter (sliced into 1 tablespoon pats)
  • 1 teaspoon roughly chopped fresh parsley (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly spray an 8×8 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Rinse Rice: Place the long grain rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch for fluffier rice.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In the prepared baking dish, stir together the rinsed rice, undiluted French onion soup, and beef broth until just combined.
  4. Add Butter: Arrange the slices of salted butter evenly on top of the rice mixture, adding richness and flavor to the dish.
  5. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, allowing the rice to absorb the liquids and begin cooking.
  6. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the rice is fully cooked and the liquid is completely absorbed; 15 minutes uncovered usually works, but oven times may vary slightly.
  7. Finish and Serve: Fluff the cooked rice gently with a fork, garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and serve hot as a flavorful side dish.

Notes

  • Be sure to use long grain rice, not instant rice, to avoid mushy texture.
  • Rinsing rice helps remove excess starch, resulting in fluffier rice.
  • Use undiluted canned French onion soup for maximum flavor.
  • Butter adds richness and enhances the overall taste of the rice.
  • Cooking times may vary depending on your oven; check rice doneness before serving.
  • Can be served alongside grilled meats, roasted chicken, or as a hearty side to vegetarian dishes.
