Ingredients
Apples
- 3 medium firm, sweet apples (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Topping
- 8 tablespoons (113g) unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup (98g) all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup (84g) old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar, divided
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
Optional for Serving
- Vanilla ice cream
- Homemade caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter or spray a baking dish large enough to fit 6 apple halves with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Core the Apples: Cut each apple in half from stem to bottom and use a spoon to carefully scoop out the core, seeds, and stem, preparing the apples for filling.
- Arrange Apples: Place the apple halves cut side up in the prepared baking dish, positioning them evenly to ensure uniform cooking.
- Add Sugar and Spice: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon evenly over the apple halves for flavor enhancement.
- Make the Topping: Melt the unsalted butter in a pan over medium heat, then remove from heat. Stir in the all-purpose flour, old-fashioned rolled oats, the remaining 1/2 cup minus 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and sea salt until combined to create a crumbly topping.
- Top the Apples: Divide the oat topping evenly over each apple half, pressing it lightly to adhere to the fruit.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes to soften the apples.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 to 30 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Serve: Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with homemade caramel sauce for an extra special dessert.
- Store Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat gently in a warm oven or microwave before serving.

- The apples should be firm and sweet varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji for the best texture and flavor.
- Use unsalted butter to control salt level in the topping.
- Leftover baked apples reheat well and are delicious either warm or cold.
