This Cream Cheese Sausage Dip is a warm, creamy, and savory appetizer perfect for game days, parties, or casual get-togethers. With a blend of spicy sausage, tangy tomatoes, and melty cream and cheddar cheeses, this easy skillet dip comes together in just 20 minutes and serves 16, making it a crowd-pleaser that pairs wonderfully with crackers, chips, or fresh vegetables.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Aromatics

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 cup onion, finely diced (1 small onion)

Cheeses and Dairy

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, cut into 1” cubes
  • ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese

Canned Goods

  • 28 ounces diced tomatoes with green chilies

Seasonings

  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage and aromatics: In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cover and cook the breakfast sausage, finely diced onion, and minced garlic. Stir occasionally, breaking up the sausage into small pieces, until the sausage is thoroughly browned and the onions are softened.
  2. Add tomatoes and cream cheese: Reduce the heat to medium, then add the diced tomatoes with green chilies along with the cream cheese cubes to the skillet. Stir continuously until the cream cheese has fully melted and the mixture is combined and creamy.
  3. Incorporate cheddar cheese: Add the sharp cheddar cheese to the skillet. Continue stirring over medium heat until the cheddar cheese is melted and the dip is smooth and well blended.
  4. Season to taste: Taste the dip and season with sea salt and ground black pepper according to your preference. Stir well to incorporate the seasoning evenly.
  5. Serve warm: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl or serve directly from the skillet. Enjoy warm with crackers, chips, fresh vegetables, or your favorite dippers.

Notes

  • Use breakfast sausage for the best flavor and texture.
  • For a spicier dip, choose diced tomatoes with hotter green chilies or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • If cream cheese is very cold, cut it into smaller pieces for faster melting.
  • This dip can be kept warm on low heat if serving over a longer period.
  • To make ahead, prepare the dip fully and reheat gently on the stovetop while stirring to maintain creaminess.
