4.4 from 9 reviews

This Apple Crumb Pie features a tender, flaky crust filled with sweetly spiced sliced apples and topped with a buttery crumb topping. Perfectly baked to a golden brown, it’s a comforting dessert great for any occasion. A gluten-free option is easily available by using gluten-free flour for both the filling and crumb topping, making it suitable for those with gluten sensitivities.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 9-inch pie crust

Filling

  • 4½ cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 3 tbsp gluten free all-purpose flour (or regular all-purpose flour)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Crumb Topping

  • ⅔ cup gluten free all-purpose flour (or regular all-purpose flour)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp cold butter (cut into chunks)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Filling: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, gluten-free flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix thoroughly to coat the apples evenly with the mixture.
  2. Assemble Filling in Crust: Transfer the prepared apple filling into the 9-inch pie crust, spreading it out evenly. If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the top of the apple layer for added texture and flavor.
  3. Prepare Crumb Topping: Place the gluten-free flour, granulated sugar, and cold butter chunks into a food processor. Pulse the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This crumb topping will add a buttery, crunchy layer over the apples.
  4. Top and Bake: Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling. Although it looks like a lot, it will bake down to a golden, crisp topping. Place the pie in the oven and bake for 40 minutes or until the filling is bubbling and the crumb topping is golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 2-3 hours. The pie can also be chilled after cooling if desired. This resting time helps the filling set, making it easier to slice and serve.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free all-purpose flour to make this pie gluten-free.
  • For extra crunch and flavor, pecans are optional but recommended in the filling.
  • Make sure to let the pie cool completely before serving to allow the filling to set properly.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and served chilled or reheated gently.
  • This recipe works well with tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for a balanced sweetness.
