Ingredients
300g plain flour
Pinch of salt
175g brown sugar
200g unsalted butter, cubed and at room temperature, plus extra for greasing
450g apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1cm pieces
50g brown sugar
1 tbsp plain flour
1 pinch ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease a 24cm ovenproof dish with butter.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, and brown sugar. Rub in the butter using your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- In a separate bowl, mix the apples with 50g brown sugar, 1 tbsp flour, and cinnamon. Stir gently to coat the apples.
- Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared dish and sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
- Serve warm with cream or custard.
Notes
- Use eating apples for firmer texture or Bramley apples for soft, fluffy results.
- Don’t over-mix the crumble to keep it crumbly, not doughy.
- Add a handful of oats to the crumble for extra texture and fibre.
- You can freeze before or after baking. Defrost before reheating or baking.
- White sugar can be used in place of brown sugar if preferred.
